PROJECT SUMMARY:

In Slovenia, forest inventory data (FI) is collected on permanent sample plots (PSP), plots of the National Forest Inventory (NFI), and at the stand level. FI is the longest and most expensive phase of the planning process, which is why, in practice, the possibilities for its optimization and rationalization are frequently explored, utilizing new methods and technologies.

The methodology for field surveys and the preparation of stand maps has not changed significantly in recent years, so a critical review is needed in terms of monitoring methods for individual parameters, as well as testing and proposing new methods and equipment for field measurements. It is essential that the data are properly processed and prepared for use, ensuring reliable information for forest management plans and reporting on the state of forests.

Once the methodology for field data collection and calculations is established, the way of combining data at different spatial levels becomes important, which presents a challenge due to differences in the design of sample grids and the temporal definition of the studied population. The documentation of calculation procedures is insufficient, so we aim to analyze the existing methods of data evaluation and provide statistically correct calculations of key parameters.

As part of the project, we will prepare a methodological proposal for the integration of the current separate forest inventory systems into a comprehensive national forest information system (NFIS). The connection of PSP, stand mapping, and NFI will enable NFIS to provide a comprehensive and dynamic insight into forest ecosystems. The proposed system will support forest management planning, forest monitoring, national and international forest state reporting, and research in the field of forest ecosystems.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Analysis of the temporal and cost aspects and the quality of the existing data collection methodology at the stand level and permanent sample plots of the public forestry service, as well as the verification of the calculation method for key parameters for forest management planning.
  2. Preparation of a methodology for calculating aggregate values, mean values, and the reliability of estimates of key parameters at different spatial levels of forest management planning.
  3. Optimization of monitoring logging volumes and other key parameters, as well as areas of deforestation and regeneration in forest inventories.
  4. Exploration of the possibility of introducing new working methods to rationalize measurements and improve the quality of forest data for connectivity with emission and carbon sink reporting systems for forest land and actual land use.
  5. Development of guidelines for the potential introduction of new technologies in forest inventories for forest management planning purposes.
  6. In collaboration with the public forestry service (ZGS), preparation of the basis for implementing calculations into digital tools within the forest management plan system.
