Forests and forestry have an important role to play in achieving the ambitious goals for a decarbonized society by 2050. Growing awareness of the impacts of climate change has led to an increasing focus on forests and forestry among a wide range of stakeholders, which increasing the importance of the environment and the economic viability of timber extraction. The quality of execution of works (forestry works, forest roads, timber transport) is the image that all users of the forest area see. Therefore, the quality of execution is crucial for a positive public image of forestry production. The project addresses the challenges and special needs that forest owners face when they hire a service provider or carry out work in their forests that they perform themselves.

The main objective of the project is to provide guidelines for spatial planning of timber extraction technologies and quality assessment of forest operations (tending work and regular felling) and construction of forest roads. The project aims to build on existing knowledge of the technological, economic, and social aspects of technology siting and develop a tool that will help forest owners, contractors, and planners alike. The Quality Assessment Methodology for Forest Work and Forest Road Construction will enable the Public Forest Service and forest owners to evaluate work performed using relevant and consistent criteria. The results will directly benefit forest owners and operators, decision makers, and professionals, particularly in the public forest service. Interim and final results will be co-designed and reviewed in dialogue with key stakeholders.
