On Wednesday, 15th October 2014, a professional symposium titled: "Horticulture - the possibilities, opportunities and best practices on the topic of TREES, OUR WEALTH" was held at the School for Horticulture and Visual Arts Celje. At the symposium researchers and professionals from the fields of horticulture, agriculture, forestry and environmental conservation presented their work. Among the presenters were also representatives of SFI's Department of Forest Physiology and Genetics, dr. Peter Železnik in dr. Gregor Božič. Dr. Peter Železnik presented an interesting talk on the topic of roots titled: "Plant Roots - the Hidden Half" and dr. Gregor Božič had a presentation about Genetic Resource Conservation and Understanding of Genetic Signs, Important for Adaptation. Dr. Božič also presented Department's new large project LIFEGENMON: Life for European Genetic Monitoring System in the final part of his presentation.
The presentations were well prepared, professionals an interesting. A mixed crowd of students, professionals and researchers had the chance to learn about the theoretical context, best practice cases and newest research findings in the fields of horticulture, agriculture, forestry and environmental conservation. Short breaks between presentations were a good opportunity for networking and the exchange of practical experience. During the main research there was also the opening of an interesting exhibition about orchids (Orchidaceae). In the coming weeks a document about the proceedings of the symposium will be published.
