dr. Smit je profesor na Univerzi v Groningenu (Nizozemska). Njegovo delo se osredotoča na interakcije med vrstami in njihove posledice za dinamiko, biotsko raznovrstnost in prostorsko organizacijo naravnih združb, s posebnim poudarkom na velikih rastlinojedih živalih in zvereh.
“On rewilding with large herbivores and the return of wolves to anthropogenic landscapes”
“In this talk, he will present two of his main research themes: grazing by large herbivores, and the return of the wolf to the Netherlands. Grazing by large herbivores is commonly applied in conservation management, and is seeing an increase given the popularity of rewilding. Yet, what do we know about the impacts on biodiversity? He will present results of their long-term grazing experiments in different research sites in the Netherlands. Secondly, he will present ongoing work on the impacts of the returned wolf to the Netherlands, that returned after ca. 150 years of absence and its population is rapidly expanding. They studied the impacts of wolves - and humans - on the behavior of wild ungulates and their cascading effects on these anthropogenic ecosystems.”
